Provider Description
SpectraCare Health Systems is a regional community-based system that provides mental health, substance abuse and intellectual disability services in Southeast Alabama in Barbour, Dale, Geneva, Henry and Houston Counties. SpectraCare, formerly known as Wiregrass Mental Health Board, was established in 1968 under Act 310 of the Alabama State Legislature.
The Haven is a substance abuse crisis residential (short term) treatment center located in Dothan, Alabama. The philosophy of The Haven is that Alcoholism and Drug Dependency is a psycho-social bio-genetic disease that when properly treated can enable an individual to live a chemically free lifestyle, indefinitely, without relapse provided he/she maintains a long-term recovery program. The program can accommodate up to 26 male residents and up to 10 female residents. Services are provided by a Haven Director, Substance Abuse Counselors, Registered Nurse, Mental Health Technicians, Voluntary Pastorial Counselors, Cooks and support staff. There is staff awake on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide supervision of the client's health and welfare. All staff are trained in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Intervention, and Program Policies and Procedures.
Treatment Routine
A minimum of 25 hours of treatment services per week is provided. Clients also participate in AA and NA meetings. An appropriate mix of treatment services, including therapy and didactic sessions, are offered. Family counseling and family education is provided.
Structure and discipline is maintained by enforcing a stringent set of rules and regulations designed to assist the client in learning how to restore manageability to his/her life. Clients are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and order of the facility, including their dormitories, living areas, and bunk areas.
The Haven serves adult substance abusers (19 years old and older) from Houston, Geneva, Barbour, Henry, and Dale counties, and from across the state. Occasionally a person who is 18 years of age may be admitted with proper documentation showing that they are living an adult lifestyle. There are no admission restrictions relative to race, sex, age, religion, or ethnicity.

SpectraCare is a tax-exempt public non-profit corporation under the IRS Code Section 501(c) 3. Contributions or donations to SpectraCare are deductible for income tax purposes.
SpectraCare is certified to provide services by the Alabama Department of Mental Health. We work with various state and local agencies to provide needed services to the citizens of our five-county area.
Referral for services is usually made by physicians, other service agencies, institutions, schools, churches, and family members.

Priority appointments (within 48hours of request for services) are reserved for people who use IV drugs and are pregnant, pregnant women, people who use IV drugs, individuals who are HIV positive and women with dependent children.
