Provider Description

In order to receive one or more of the substance abuse services provided by the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority, applicants must be (a) Richmond residents and (b) suffer from a substance use disorder. Consumers are charged for all services based on a financial assessment and along a sliding fee schedule.

Residential Detox Services

Overnight detoxification services, normally of 3 to 7 days duration, in a non-hospital setting, for adults who are experiencing physical, psychological and/or social dysfunction as result of their dependence on alcohol and/or other drugs.  Services include medical and psychosocial care designed to resolve the toxic state as well as educational and other supportive interventions designed to enhance the individual/'s motivation to pursue further treatment for chemical dependence.

Medically assisted detoxification involves the use of prescribed medication to manage the cravings and physical discomfort during the immediate withdrawal period, as well as regular medical monitoring by nursing staff.  Social detoxification generally does not involve the use of medications, but rather relies on the provision of psychosocial support and basic nutritional support to assist the individual going through withdrawal. Fees for consumers assessed on a sliding scale.  Primary funding for this service provided through contract with RBHA.

Outpatient Treatment Services

Non-residential counseling services provided on scheduled (regular or intensive) basis, in an outpatient clinic setting, to adults suffering from alcohol and other drug abuse or dependence.  Services may include:  assessment; individual, group and family counseling of an educational, supportive and therapeutic nature; referral for ancillary social, medical and/or psychological services as needed; aftercare services for persons who have completed a course of residential or outpatient treatment; and a specialized counseling program designed for the significant others of an identified alcohol and/or other drug abuser.  Outpatient and intensive outpatient services provided for teens after school and early evening.  Fees for consumers assessed on a sliding scale.  Primary funding for services provided through contract with RBHA.

Outpatient Opioid Treatment Services

(Methadone or Buprenorphine)

Outpatient services coupled with the use of methadone or buprenorphine (Suboxone) to treat and/or detoxify adults suffering from opioid (i.e. heroin) dependence.  An Intensive Outpatient Program is combined with the use of methadone or Suboxone to detoxify opioid dependent individuals.  Consumers receive a physical examination and are prescribed methadone or Suboxone for a variable period ranging from 30 days to several months.  They will receive group counseling three times per week during the detox phase of treatment.  Upon completion of the detox protocol with medication, consumers will advance to the second phase of the program, participate in two group sessions per week and may be prescribed Naltrexone, an opiate antagonist.  Phase two participation is for approximately six weeks, and then consumers will move into an aftercare status indefinitely.  Regular participation in Narcotics Anonymous is encouraged and transportation to some meetings may be available.  For methadone maintenance services, or opioid replacement therapy, consumers receive required counseling and daily methadone or Suboxone dose administration as long term treatment for opiate addiction.  Consumer fees are required, in addition to the RBHA's subsidy. Primary funding for these services provided through contract with RBHA.

Residential Rehabilitation

Overnight alcohol and other drug abuse rehabilitation services provided to adults in non-hospital settings, in conjunction with supportive living and other supportive, training and rehabilitative services within the context of a psychosocial therapeutic milieu.  Program design may include group and individual counseling, alcohol and other drug abuse education, special focus groups such as relapse prevention planning, stress management, nutrition in recovery, etc., and referral for ancillary social, psychological and/or medical services as indicated.  Length of stay is variable, depending on the needs of each consumer. Long term treatment is available for consumers who need to pursue employment and housing before discharge.  Consumers need physical exam and T.B. test prior to admission to facility and must be detoxed.  Normally this is done with admission to Rubicon Detox first, for 3 or 5 days.  Fees for services assessed on a sliding scale.  Primary funding for this service provided through contract with RBHA.
