Patients seeking treatment may be admitted by their own physician. If they do not have a physician, they can be seen by a member of the hospital's medical staff. Patients are usually first referred for a pre-admission screening. Following this screening, a diagnostic assessment is performed. The assessment gathers a variety of information on the patient's medical background, history of substance abuse, and psychosocial functioning. However, the assessment may be bypassed if a patient is in crisis.
